Aerial vs Rooftop Infrared Surveys

In response to recent LinkedIn question:

We have used aerial infrared thermography surveys on a few large projects in the past.  Like everything else in roof consulting, they have advantages and disadvantages and it depends on what information you are trying to acquire as to their usefulness.  Depending on the size, weather, site conditions, and information needed they can be a quick easy way to get an overall assessment of the amount of wet insulation.  We have also combined projects of multiple clients in nearby locations to make it more cost effective for each client.  Wet areas must be verified on each roof to avoid false positives.

Most of our infrared surveys are still performed on the roof with hand-held equipment.  As per the previous posts, boots on the roof is usually more accurate and the roof can be marked during the same operation.  The knowledge, skill, experience, and timing of the camera operator is more important than the airborne vs. rooftop survey.
